SciLux podcast – Olivier De Schutter and Anne-Catherine Guio about Child Poverty
07 May 2024
Child Poverty
Worldwide, about 800 million children live below the poverty line of US$3.20 a day, according to Unicef. In Luxembourg, one in four children live below the poverty line, which is defined at the EU level as 60% of the median income. It’s one of the highest in the EU. Prof. Olivier De Schutter and Dr Anne-Catherine Guio have chosen to focus their research on child poverty and have co-authored a book on the subject.
Professor of Law at UCLouvain and at SciencesPo (Paris), Prof. Olivier De Schutter is also the United Nations Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights by the Human Rights Council. On 23 May, he has been invited by the Chamber of Deputies of Luxembourg to be the keynote speaker at its annual conference, this year on “Challenges of the youth in Luxembourg”.
Dr Anne-Catherine Guio is a Senior Researcher at the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER) and ensured the scientific coordination of the first two EU’s Feasibility Studies for a ‘European Child Guarantee’.
Together with Hugh Frazer – Adjunct Professor at Maynooth University, Ireland – and Eric Marlier – International Scientific Coordinator at the LISER, Prof. De Schutter and Dr Guio co-authored the book “The Escape from Poverty – Breaking the Vicious Cycles Perpetuating Disadvantage”.
Prepare for an inspiring discussion about child poverty with our guests: Prof. Olivier De Schutter, from UCLouvain and Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights at the United Nations, and Dr Anne-Catherine Guio, Senior Researcher at LISER.
