Epigenetics

What influence does the environment have on our genes, especially in the early stages of life? What kind of changes does it cause? And how do we respond to these changes? These are the questions that Dr Archibold Mposhi is trying to answer through his research in Epigenetics.

Archibold Mposhi is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH). Working in the “Immune Endocrine and Epigenetics” group, his research focuses on the epigenetic mechanisms that drive changes in the immune system following exposure to early life adversity (ELA).

Listen to Archibold Mposhi to delve into the fascinating world of Epigenetics and learn more about the influence of the environment on our genes, and the mechanisms underlying environmental control of the stress reaction.

ImmunoTwin: A Highly Interdisciplinary Project

Socioeconomic conditions have a significant impact on health and disease. Despite considerable effort, these socioeconomically associated health disparities represent a substantial economic burden and psychosocial challenge. In many cases living in poor socioeconomic conditions represents a major contributor to both acute and chronic care expenditures. Accelerated immunological ageing, the natural decline in immune functioning with age maybe the key to understanding these health disparities.

In this project, Archibold Mposhi is part of a highly interdisciplinary team that brings together an economist, a psychologist and an immunologist/epigeneticist. By addressing not only the biology, but the socioeconomic environment, the research team hopes to gain a deeper understanding of how our social environment affects out health. Their goal is to inform public policy, and in the longer-term influence community-based prophylactic approaches to intervention, eventually allowing health disparities based on socioeconomic status and their associated costs to be reduced.
