Mitochondria in Parkinson’s disease
Arrived in Luxembourg thanks to the prestigious ATTRACT Fellowship from the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR), Prof. Grünewald has been leading groundbreaking research into the role of mitochondria in Parkinson’s disease, offering insights that could potentially pave the way for revolutionary treatments.
Mitochondria, often referred to the “powerhouses of the cell,” are integral to cellular energy production. However, as Professor Grunewald explains, their role goes far beyond that. These dynamic organelles are involved in a wide range of cellular processes, including signalling, cell death, and even immune responses.
If there is potentially a link to mitochondrial signalling, then, and we could influence that, that could be a solution to Parkinson’s disease.

In this episode, Professor Grünewald also highlights the interconnectedness of various cellular systems and the importance of interdisciplinary research in advancing our understanding of brain diseases.
Luxembourg, an international hub for Parkinson’s research
Over the years, Luxembourg has positioned itself at the forefront of international research in the field of neurodegeneration.
