Health Economics

The complex interplay between health and socio-economic factors is a two-way street; not only does health influence socio-economic outcomes, but the economy also has a significant impact on health. In this vast discipline of health economics, Marc Suhrcke is working on several projects, ranging from universal health coverage to health behaviours.

Marc Suhrcke heads the cross-departmental Research Programme on ‘Health and Health Systems’ at the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER). He is also Professor of Global Health Economics at the Centre for Health Economics (CHE) at the University of York, UK. His research interests revolve around a wide range of health economic aspects, including the socio-economic determinants and consequences of health and health inequalities, as well as the evaluation of the impact of population- and system-level policies on health and related outcomes. Most of his work seeks to use observational data to uncover relevant, ideally causal relationships.

Universal Health Coverage

Universal health coverage (UHC) aims to ensure that everyone has access to the healthcare they require without facing financial hardships. This concept, advocated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has garnered commitment from the majority of countries worldwide.

Prof. Suhrcke research work aims at helping countries to achieve the goal of UHC during challenging times, with a commitment to the principle of “leaving no one behind”, in particular marginal groups. His project spans four big countries – Brazil, India, Indonesia and South Africa – all characterised by high inequality and diverse states at varying stages of UHC, grappling with distinct challenges such as COVID-19 and natural disasters.

In addressing these complexities, Marc Suhrcke’s UHC project is dedicated to formulating a comprehensive program that encompasses diverse methodological areas, including resource mobilization, equitable allocation, governance, and the role of an intersectoral approach.
